We wanted to take the opportunity to report on the successful Teacher Appreciation Week we just had and to thank all those that took time from their busy schedules to help in any way, shape, or form to make it a great event. You all ROCK!!!!!! We were able to fill the halls and doors of the school with a glamorous Hollywood vibe that started off with a red carpet and flashing paparazzi made by Dafna at the front entrance. Each teacher's door was decorated with a personalized marquee movie sign made by Nicole so the teachers and paras got to see their name in "lights." We overheard Erin say that the teachers felt so special walking in the building that they didn’t even want to step on the red carpet.
Monday, with a simple VIP backdrop and a lot of fun props that were picked up or designed by Cora and Nicole, along with Nicole's camera and photography and photo editing skills, we were able to provide both the teachers and the kids with a fun picture taking photo session that made them feel like true celebrities. Thanks to the help of Allen, Katie S, and Ellen O, we were able to get every child (and many teachers!) in the building photographed as they enjoyed the fun and silliness. Ms. McGann mentioned to us that she wished we had more opportunities to have so much fun with the kids like the photo booth.
Tuesday, just as they do every year, The Herns took the spotlight and brought a beautiful display of bagels, spreads, yogurt, great coffee and freshly baked poppy seed bread as the teachers were treated to breakfast. It takes a couple of teachers to know what makes school staff feel really appreciated! Dafna did a wonderful job making centerpieces and getting coordinated and Hollywood themed plates, napkins and utensils. Cora's handmade signs used at the photo booth the day earlier were also put to use as wonderful decorations. Kaori brought a delicious fruit salad and Molly S. and Dafna collaborated in serving delicious virgin Mimosas. Ms. Brown and Ms. Haynes told us that they felt glamorous starting the day with a toast and ‘fancy’ champagne glasses.
Wednesday was time to pop and a delicious popcorn bar was served and fully enjoyed by all the staff. Special thanks to our poppers: Kaori, Katie S, Karen Q (cookies and cream still came out as the favorite), Nicole (you can’t go wrong with bacon) and Dafna. Nicole made a "thank-you" marquee sign with real lights to display in the teacher's lounge for the event. The faces of delight on the teachers every time they walked into the room was priceless.
Thursday's event was a grand SOUPerstar luncheon. Early in the day the teachers asked us where we were getting the soups from and they were so excited to hear that they were all (minus one) going to be homemade by Dafna and freshly prepared just for them. The SOUPerstar lunch was a HUGE hit. Not only were we able to please everyone with delicious soups catered to every taste and dietary restriction (such as vegetarian and gluten free options), but they all got a kick out of the clever movie names we gave each one of the soups -- like “Gone with the Wind” chili, “Lord of the Rings” onion soup and "Best Supporting ensemble" for the toppings of the tortilla soup. It would have not been possible without the support of Karen Q, who squeezed time in her busy day to help set up and clean up; Franziska, for her help setting up and making her mouthwatering crusty bread; Ellen, for sending a tasty spinach salad; and Molly S., for sending the best Minty Brownies the teachers had ever tasted.
Lastly, Friday was time for a full dessert bar along with personalized awards, photo collage keepsakes, and swag bags. Katie S., Ellen, Nicole, Dafna, Cora and Kaori joined forced to sweeten the teeth of our wonderful teachers and baked or brought in fabulous desserts -- there were from "popcorn" cupcakes, gluten free organic red velvet cake, to bakery famous brambles and everything in between. Mick and Henrietta came to the rescue of those more health conscious and brought in a gorgeous fruit salad. The teachers loved each one of them and fawned over how cute everything was set up. And just when they thought they had been fully spoiled rotten, thanks to the help and financial support of Kelly, Karen Q and Lesley, we surprised the classroom teachers and paras with fully equipped SWAG BAGS, complete with beauty products, supplies and OSCAR statuettes. With help from Nicole, classroom teachers received personalized HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME STARS. Nicole edited all 180+ photos from the photobooth and Dafna artfully arranged them into collages for each teacher -- so those were also handed out in addition to the Hollywood stars and the swag bags. They all loved them. We even saw a couple of our beloved teachers get teary-eyed and emotional about the display of appreciation we as the Parent Council were able to display. Many of them walked into the lounge to take pictures of the various events to send to fellow teachers just to make them a little jealous :). We were personally thanked numerous times throughout the week by teachers and staff who stopped us when they saw us.
In all, it was a fun and successful event for everyone. Since there were so many donations of time and money from parents, we spent $350 in making this week possible for our teachers and staff. The money raised during our last two dress-down days, a total of $370, was allotted for this so we broke even and didn’t have to use any extra funds from the parent council account.
Hopefully we can continue to do this for the amazing staff that instruct and take care of our kids during the entire school year. We casually asked them if they would be willing to do a survey about the week so we could make improvements and they overwhelmingly told us that there was no need for that because they all LOVE it and wouldn't wish to change a thing.
